Bipasha Basu's sporting a trendy, formal look in her new film Corporate, and Bangalore's working women say it's a fab way to dress for work. No more being a behenji. If you're going to work, might as well do it in style, like actor Bipasha Basu does in Corporate. She's the business gal, yet she isn't sporting crisp sarees or high neck kurtas. She's opted for tailored jackets and fitted pants, showing that you don't have to look dowdy to be a good worker.
Bangalore's working gals have dumped cumbersome dupattas for western formals, which score for their comfort factor. But style always comes first and that's why this slick look's a rage. Says Pashmeena Barker, who owns a few smart suits, "The suit makes you look both powerful and sexy. Women get a lot of respect when they dress in suits. And since we want to be treated equally, shouldn't we dress the same?" Before you head out and pick up a black pinstriped suit, Pashmeena says experimenting is the key: "I would wear jeans, a T-shirt and a blazer. Or team a jacket with a skirt that has slits on both sides." Although stylist Sheetal Sharma doesn't quite like the formal look on Bipasha, she loves the look in general. "It covers what it needs to — you can even wear a jacket up to your knees." Sheetal feels, "the important thing is to keep the look feminine. Wear square-toed open shoes or slip ons. The bag and the shirt do the trick."... ...While women are all for western formals, Kapil Hinduja, a corporate with an MNC, says he prefers the Indian look. "Indian corporates look much better in sarees or salwars. The suited look exists only in the executive level. Though some women wear suits when they have foreign clients visiting, even then, they are encouraged to dress Indian." Kapil says many stick to the desi look because they don't want to attract unwanted attention. "A woman in a suit stands out. People might just think she's dressing hot. I guess it's a cultural thing." But hospitality industry professional Preeti Kumar has often ditched the saree for a suit. "It's all about power dressing. The saree gives you a more approachable look, but the suit allows you to express your personality." That's just what Preeti does with her olive green or pink jackets. "With international brands coming to Bangalore, thankfully suits for women aren't just black or white."
